This is the identifying mark of the US Army's 2nd Infantry Division, also known as the "Indianhead Division." This is because of the picture of a drawn Indian head on their black emblem with a white star. The soldiers of this division made this sign themselves during World War I. On June 7, 1944, a day after D-Day, they arrived at Omaha Beach. By October, they were already in Germany. In April 1945, they took Hadamar and liberated a psychiatric hospital. This was an important place where the Nazis were killing disabled people. The division helped the surviving prisoners. Then, on April 14, 1945, they liberated Leipzig-Schönfield concentration camp, part of Buchenwald, where they put the corpses in graves. The following day, soldiers liberated the Spergau/Zöschen labor camp in Zöschen. In early May, the division moved on to Czechoslovakia and took the city of Pilsen on May 8, the day of victory in Europe (VE Day). They remained in Pilsen until July 10, 1945, when they returned to America to practice for an attack on Japan. They were still practicing when Japan surrendered on Aug. 14, 1945.
