This RAF Flight Sergeants set is a standard uniform worn by pilots in the Royal Air Force. It was specifically worn by Spitfire and Hurricane pilots during the Battle of Britain, which took place from July to October 1940. It is possible that bomber crews also wore this uniform in the early years of the Second World War. The reason behind the rank of Flight Sergeant was to address the shortage of officers in the RAF. Other ranks were trained as pilots and given the rank of Flight Sergeant so that they could fly alongside their fellow RAF officers.
