The Pathfinders were specially trained units whose tasks included announcing drop zones for the C47 aircraft, which they did with the well-known eureka beacons, placing them on the drop zones before the larger troops arrived. Pathfinders have been deployed from D-Day because in earlier Airborne drop zones (think of Sicily and Italy) there were no Pathfinders yet, before D-Day it often ended badly with these earlier droppings of the troops.
